An AI voice agent is software that can hold a phone conversation. It listens to what the caller says, works out what they want, and replies in a spoken voice, then does something useful such as booking a slot or sending a payment link.
How a voice agent works
Three pieces work together. Speech to text turns the caller's words into text. A language model reads that text, uses your business rules and documents to decide the answer, and writes the reply. Text to speech turns the reply back into a voice. Around these sit your own systems, such as a calendar, a customer database or a payment link service.
Because the agent follows instructions you write and can only act through the tools you connect, its behaviour can be tested before it speaks to a real customer.
Where Indian businesses use it
The common uses are repetitive and high in volume: answering the same admission or product questions, reminding people about fee or service payments, confirming appointments, and following up on enquiries that arrived outside office hours.
Many callers prefer to speak in Hindi or a mix of Hindi and English, so language coverage and accent handling should be tested on real calls from your own customers, not only on demos.
What should stay with a person
Disputes, complaints, exceptions to policy and anything sensitive should go to a person. A good voice agent knows its limits, hands the call over with the context already written down, and never pretends to be human.
How to start
Pick one narrow call type, write down what a good answer sounds like, and run the agent alongside your team before it takes live calls alone. We build and tune voice agents as part of our AI voice agent service, and we are happy to talk through whether your calls are a good fit.
